Grouping- Gaps (For P3-P6) *inclusive of FREE materials

Gaps’ concept, which actually stems from Grouping, is part of our ‘G.P.S’ method to tackle Pattern-type questions and will be explored further in our future post.

Number of gaps = Number of Things – 1

Let's take a look below at a commonly-asked exam question on 'Gaps' concept.

A similar example of 'Gaps' is 'Cuts'.

Question

If it takes 12 minutes to cut a log into 3 pieces, how long would it take to cut the log into

4 pieces?

Here we need to take note of the number of cuts, rather than the number of pieces we end up with.

Solution:

3 - 1 = 2 cuts

2 cuts → 12 minutes

1 cut → 12 ÷ 2 = 6 minutes

4 - 1 = 3 cuts

3 cuts → 6 x 3 = 18 minutes
